The Mai
This play by Marina Carr follows the title as she endeavours to save her marriage and happiness, as her husband returns into her life, only to meet a tragic end.
Designing it as a filmed adaptation, I put it in a contemporary setting, in a house that's awkward design showcases the Mai's impulse to show off her money and create an impressive space rather than a functional, liveable one. The rooms styles do not quite fit together, but instead have a focus on the lake that the Mai will eventually kill herself in. I designed it with nods to magical realism, witht he water of the lake appearing in the home in certain scenes, and the opening show being the Mai playing herself as a cello under the lake, as her husband often does throughout the story
