Marat/Sade

The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade, usually shortened to Marat/Sade, is a 1963 play by Peter Weiss. it is about the French revolution, and is a play within a play, ending in a riot.

I chose to design this play using the language of modern protest, with metal barriers, hard concrete, and improvised objects like signs, metal sheets and a ladder. I chose to give it a more modern setting as I believe it shows more clearly the universality of the plays themes, and a more gritty feel, like these people are simply putting on the play in an abandoned building they are squatting in.
